Five Held For Killing Wild Elephants


When we think of the elephant poaching problem, we often think of Africa.  But this article proves that poaching takes place wherever there are elephants, including India.





JORHAT: Security forces arrested five persons, allegedly involved in killing wild elephants, from the Dimow area of Sivasagar district on Wednesday. Some arms and ammunition were found on them.

They were arrested by a team of the Nitaipukhuri-based army unit from a sand bar in the district when army personnel were patrolling the area. Later, the arrested persons were handed over to police.

Police said army arrested the persons from Kanchi sapori in 
the Nitaipukhuri area at 4.30 am on Wednesday. "The Nitaipukhuri-based army unit handed over five persons to police on Wednesday for being involved in killing wild elephants at Panidihing reserve. Two of the arrested are from ailed from Arunachal Pradesh, while three others are residents of Dhakuakhana in Lakhimpur district,'' said Dimow Police Station OC Amorjyoti Bailung.

He said one rifle, ammunition, an axe, a machete and some foodgrain were seized from their possession. "Army found arms and ammunition from the poachers and according to their
confessional statement, they tried to enter into the nearby Panidihing forest to kill wild elephants,'' he said.

The Panidihing forest, which spreads over an area of 33.9 sqkm in the Dimow revenue circle of Sivasagar district, is frequented by wild elephants. At present, a strong herd comprising 60 jumbos have taken shelter in the forest. Poachers enter the forest and try to kill the elephants for their tusks.
