Given the instability in parts of Africa, the illegal ivory trade is really the "elephant in the room."
Armed militants and those involved in organized crime seek quick money, and poached elephant tusks provide that. Once poachers get the money, they buy more weapons which leads to weakened governments and destabilized countries. Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said in her Call to Action speech, “Over the past few years wildlife trafficking has become more organized, more lucrative, more widespread, and more dangerous than ever before." This is a major security issue for our entire world, and obviously for the elephants!
